From The Desk Of: Dave Southall

Since you’ve found this website I suppose it’s ok to let you know… “I’m an model ship addict.” The truth is, I’m always on the internet looking for model shops tips and tricks. That’s what led me to put this website up. Let me explain…

While surfing around the internet, I stumbled upon something so fantastic that it immediately got my attention… In fact, I discovered something sooo amazing that at first I thought it was "too good to be true" like most things are.

You see, a few months ago, I was doing some research on the popular science publication one of the most well-known and respected publication’s in recent history. I noticed that most of their work was available and accounted for with the exception of one of his most important pieces of work,‘Ship Model Making’.  Well, this got me curious and so I started digging a little deeper; I started to send off a few emails asking questions, but unfortunately every road I seemed to head down was a dead end… until a couple of weeks ago that is…

By a stroke of luck, I emailed my story to one of my favorite site’s webmasters… as it turned out he had an old copy of this difficult to find book - it was right under my damn nose. After numerous emails I finally got him to mail me his copy. for more than I’d like to tell my wife about – if you know what I mean

I Uncovered One Of The Most Important Model Ship Making Manuscripts Of All Time....

Even though it was first published in 1954  this book has the best model ship making  information I have ever seen.

In the 16 chapters here’s just a snippet of what you’ll learn:

  • The tools: Most tools used for model making are very expensive, but it doesn’t have to be, you will be shown how to make your own.

  • Hulls, what are they and how to create them. Different types of ships had different hulls, you have to shape it carefully to replicate the true look of the ship.

  • There are many small parts that make-up the whole ship. Everything from decks, to rigging to the small ropes for the sails---you will need to know what materials best to use to achieve an authentic look.

  • The selection of tools and equipment are integral to creating the near perfect model ship. You will be guided on how to check authentication with the aid of pictures and photo’s---learn where to find these resources.

  • Spars and masts.... discover how to correctly measure these most important part of your ship. You see, different ships had different shapes and measurements, if these aren ’t right then the whole dimension of the ship will be wrong.

  • Learn how to make small parts, that are very much the a part of building your model ship. You will be shown how to work on small pieces and what ‘cunning little tricks’ to use to create a work of art.

    And there’s loads more…

At this point, you might be wondering how you can get your hands on a copy…

    Well here’s the good news.

After doing even more research (I told you I was a model ship addict) I have contacted the original copyright owners and gained permission to republish Popular Science’s  complete work on this website.
